Tandem Acquires Capillary Biomedical to Continue Innovation

Tandem Diabetes Care acquired Capillary Biomedical, an infusion set developer, in 2022 to further develop products designed to improve the lives of people living with diabetes.

“We look forward to developing new and innovative infusion set solutions that are designed to extend wear time and enhance user experience, while reducing occlusions, body burden, and waste,” said John Sheridan, Tandem Diabetes Care President and Chief Executive Officer.

Jim Leal, Senior Vice President of Operations in Manufacturing for Tandem, has been spearheading efforts to merge the two companies since the acquisition last year.

“One of the main reasons I joined Tandem over 12 years ago is that my youngest child was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 3,” Jim said. “Now he’s a 30-year-old doctor living in Florida! I had familiarity with insulin pumps before joining the company and when I saw the t:slim X2 pump, I knew we had something.”

Jim took a broad-lens approach for how to align the Capillary Biomedical team to the culture at Tandem, especially when considering how to best integrate the company within the functional departments that already existed.

“I’m really happy to say that my job was very easy,” Jim said. “We have a hardworking team that follows the exact same values that Tandem brings to the table. It’s been really fun to watch that.”

Engineering the Future of Infusion Sets

Tandem Director of Clinical Affairs, Alayne Lehman, has been working to develop additional infusion set options.

Pairing [CapBio’s infusion set development] with a t:slim X2 insulin pump with Control-IQ technology — I think that’s a winning combination.

Kennie Hsu, Director of Product Development Engineering, appreciates that he and his team were able to work directly with users to develop an ideal infusion set from scratch.

“We’ve built this team up over the last four or five years,” Kennie said, “Tandem has really shown us that they want this to be successful — it makes us excited and pushes us forward.”

We’re looking forward to seeing how our growing Tandem team will continue to change people’s lives.
